Post Breeze/Race Remodeling III

The illustration at left shows the partially mineralized and unmineralized collagen cells on the outside of the bone that line the mineralized mostly intert calcified matrix on the primarily solid interior.

Of particularly significance notice the "spongy" trabecular bone at the condylar aspects serving to cushion and absorb which contains a much higher and less dense percentage of unmineralized or partially mineralized collagen.

Here is another view. Click on images to enlarge.

If remodeling refers to changes in the bone presumably, but not necessarily, for the better, we look first at the conditions at the cellular level caused by the speed event. The following is merely a product of my own thought process and undoubtedly is incomplete, but hopefully will lead in the right direction:

1. Heat builds up from various physical processes including body heat, compression, and movement during the event, and then post event is supported by inflammatory processes and readjustments at the cellular level due to rebounding back to original shape and form of various component materials. I conclude, on due thought, that this rebounding effect is (signficantly) incomplete.
2. Slight molecular and atomic reshaping and rearrangement of the various materials is an effect independent of heat and includes the collagen, circulatory system, nerves, etc.
3. Collagen cell membranes severely put upon during the event have suffered micro scarring causing commencement of repair processes immediately post event.
4. Heat, movement, damage all combine to immediate stimulation of certain physical and chemical processes including circulatory system and nerve dilation that results in speedy delivery of repair materials.
5. The 3/25/09 post speculated the movement and pressure of the event has created micro spacing to be filled in with new bone glue materials.
6. Osteo clast/blast activity commences along the angles of strain and around immediately damaged cells.

Our signal that these processes operate immediately post event occurs when we touch the outer surface of the cannon and feel heat radiating out from the interior. The less conditioned and tough the bone, the more heat we feel and the longer before the heat subsides.

The short term remodeling effect of the above processes, next post.

will appear in post below this one.
