Thurs. Pre-Preakness Misc.

The RR got up out of the wrong side of bed take on the Preakness Stakes:
Does anybody on the backstretch know how to hold a horse?  Or, anybody besides me tire of seeing these great horses led around unable to move their heads, flick at a fly, or even normally look around.  G-r-r-r-r-r. Earth to grooms, it is possible to control a horse and give the horse it's head.  Worst e.g. was Zenyatta who'se idiot groom perpetually kept her head cranked to the left.  Two handlers to lead Orb.  Really?

Orb obviously has also won the bandaging Derby.  It's other than that I know everything.  But--standing bandages.  Why?  And, above the knees. This accomplishes what?  Horses are unable to talk, unfortunately. As to how Steve Haskins' copyright infringement lawsuit against the RR blog goes for co-opting Haskin's (great) photos--will advise.

Training:  Things going well.  Weather cooperating.  Found a nice straight away though it's up and down like a roller coaster. 15 min. off and on trot this morn.  #17 has taken a few gallop steps now.  2 weeks to #148 recommence training.  Weather--dry.

I just read your post. I think your comment's bode well for your knowledge of race horses. Two people at the head of a 10 million dollar horse isn't so outrageous. What if he started acting up and got loose? Do you really think these experienced handlers wouldn't realize Orb had an itch or a fly was annoying him while they're at his head protecting him. They would promptly step in and assist him. The woman at Orb's head, is his very experienced exercise rider and a thorough horsewoman, Jennifer Patterson. She forgot more about race horses than most people know.
The pic you posted of Orb "done up", in standing bandages above his knees...and you pose the question WHY? Any horseman knows looking at the picture, he is done up in poultice and is out grazing. They cover the poultice with sheet cotton so the horse doesn't get his nose full of poultice sniffing around. This is done because he either just finished a work that morning or may have walked that morning, due to a work or race the day before. Only the best stable's and horseman do horses up in poultice up to their knees after a work or race. Shug's outfit fits that bill.
